News from the Belfry

Our learners have progressed very well over the last few weeks such that they are able to contribute to the ringing on Sundays and other special occasions. We are able to regularly ring all 8 bells now on a Sunday which hasn’t been the case for years.

We have had a number of special occasions to ring for this year. The bells rang out on April 21st to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. We rang for the tour de Yorkshire as the cyclists approached Helmsley. Wedding ringing has continued and the bells were rung half muffled on Good Friday – thank you to Simon for organising this.

A good number of us have attended branch practices travelling further afield. In April this took the form of our striking competition held at Middleton. Helmsley were able to enter two teams coming third and fourth. This was for several of our ringers their first competition so a very good effort.

June 4th is our annual branch outing so we will be heading to Saltburn to ring at 5 towers around and about. We welcome Easingwold ringers on that occasion to Helmsley to ring for the wedding on that day.

We have had a number of visitors, some as complete bands ringing at times outside of the normal practice time and others joining us on a Monday evening.

Finally Simon was called upon again to make his way up to the bells to do some repair work as one of our less experienced ringers forgot her own strength and broke a stay! This can be dangerous as the rope sometimes whips around as the bell goes full circle snatching the rope from the ringer below. However, on this occasion our ringer held on to it preventing this happening but as a result gained some hand burns.
